We rely on the generous support of our volunteers to help us achieve the goals of the project

Individuals

Kaipatiki Project’s core strength is represented by our volunteers, and we can now take on even more volunteers than ever before. Thanks to funding from the Auckland Council we have a dedicated Volunteer Co-ordinator, meaning that we can offer people volunteering activities throughout the week and at weekends.

Weekly Opportunities

Kaipatiki Project provides regular, easily accessible, week-day volunteering opportunities. These particularly suit people who are between jobs, have stopped full-time work, or are baby-boomers with even more time to give. There is no pressure to commit your time and we don’t expect you to turn up every week, just come along if the mood takes you. A morning at Kaipatiki Project is always a refreshing distraction from the norm and a warm welcome and morning tea are always provided.

We would really appreciate your help protecting the environment – simply turn up at the following times and we will get you involved with our current projects:

Monday & Thursday mornings 9am – 12pm

Nursery work and centre maintenence at Kaipatiki Project Centre

Wednesday mornings 9am-12pm

Nursery work at Hobsonville Community Plant Nursery

Thursday mornings 9am-12.30pm

Reserve maintenance in Witheford & Eskdale reserves (from 14 Feb 2013)

First Saturday of each summer month 9am – 12.30pm

Bush Blitz Community Working Bee

Here’s why some of our regular volunteers choose to devote time to Kaipatiki Project.

“I love to feel soil under my nails. My garden at home is too small, so coming here gives me a chance to do much more.”

“It has become my main job! Working with plants you get a sense of serenity and achievement, especially if you are feeling a bit low or disconnected – it makes your self-esteem go up.”

“It keeps your growing skills alive. Every time I come I can’t wait to see how the plants have grown.”

Community Planting Days

There is something very satisfying about planting a tree…en masse with lots of other people. It makes you feel like something is being achieved.

Come and help us plant thousands of new native trees, plants and grasses in the Eskdale Reserve Network, Glenfield and at Hobsonville Point. Bring your family, friends, work-mates, club, church…all welcome.

Please email us if you are planning to bring a large group (15 or more people) so that we can cater accordingly. A free BBQ is put on to thank all planters for their support. Please bring a spade if you have one, gloves and spare spades are provided.

Planting takes place on the first Saturday of each month from June to September at various locations around the Eskdale Reserve network (Glenfield/Birkdale) and at Hobsonville Point (Isitt Road).

6 July (Matariki Festival 2013) – our planting day to celebrate Matariki will be at Hobsonville Point on 13 July, not 6 July at Eskdale Reserve as published.

Bush Blitz Community Working Bee

On the first Saturday of each month we organise a community working bee – either a planting or a bush clean up.

The Bush Blitz is a chance for those working during the week to work in the bush and surrounding area on the weekend. The purpose is to improve the health of the bush – either through removing specific weed species, weeding a swampy area or clearing rubbish from a stream for instance.

We welcome organised groups to join us….but give us a call in advance if you can so that we can be better prepared for you.

Tools and morning tea are provided. No chemicals are used, just muscle and enthusiasm! Come dressed for the weather, with proper footwear and be prepared to get dirty.

Safety notice – some sites may not be suitable for younger children, please phone the Centre in advance on 482 1172.

2013 Working Bee Days, to be confirmed

Community Groups

From May to August each year we welcome community groups and clubs who want a different experience for their members and to do some good for their local natural environment. Perhaps you run a language class or new migrants group, and want to introduce people to the great Kiwi bush and its fantastic native trees and plants.

Our restoration staff will take you to a nearby reserve to plant trees, clear away weeds and help protect stream-sides.

Back at the nursery your group can learn how to pot up seedlings, and help us to care for native plants. Half or full days are available and our staff will make sure that the activities are suitable for the age and ability of the group.

Exchange students get first hand experience of what goes on at the Environment Cenre

Contact the Environment Centre to find out how we can work together for your community group:
